Cognitive 3

Skills

  • Players develop and strengthen hand-eye coordination as they kick, throw, bounce, and catch the Duraball.
  • Players develop and strengthen motor planning skills as they learn and practice the steps to propel the Duraball.
  • Players develop and strengthen reaction time as they learn to anticipate the Duraball’s arrival when thrown or kicked from a playmate.

Play Ideas

  • Develop counting skills as the participant counts up (or down) as the he / she passes the Duraball back and forth with a facilitator or peers. If a participant recites a number out of sequence, the counting resets to the beginning.
  • Develop memory skills by playing a game of Duraball Simon Says. The Facilitator will instruct the participant to bounce, roll, or bounce on the Duraball a certain number of times or combine them for more of a challenge.
  • Practice and strengthen sense of directionality by tossing or rolling ball towards participant and indicate which side of the body / limb he / she may use to bat the Duraball back towards the Facilitator / play partner.

Physical 4

Skills

  • Players develop overall body conditioning and coordination by kicking, throwing, or catching the ball.
  • Players develop core strength and balance as they shift their body weight to maneuver the ball while remaining standing in an upright position.
  • Players develop and strengthen bilateral coordination as they use both hands to catch, throw, or carry the lightweight, oversized Duraball.

Play Ideas

  • To promote bilateral coordination, create a Duraball Station in an obstacle course in which the participant must throw the ball at and hit an oversized target before moving on to next obstacle.
  • To promote core strength and trunk stability, play a game of hot potato with the Duraball in which players must pass the ball to the person to the left or right while seated and twisting from the waist up.
  • To promote greater overall body conditioning, strength and endurance substitute the Duraball in familiar games such as volleyball, tennis, badminton, or floor hockey. The larger scale of the Duraball will engage a greater proportion of the body need to propel the ball.

Social/Emotional 4

Skills

  • Players practice creativity through open play with the Duraball by developing their own games and rules or utilizing it an unconventional, applied manner.
  • The Duraball promotes independent, partner, or group play allowing for players to gradually increase their comfort level with the operation of the ball and offering a socialization opportunity that include others.
  • The Duraball promotes active play which provides a socially appropriate outlet for players to diffuse emotions in a productive manner.

Play Ideas

  • To develop a sense of teamwork and peer comradery, utilize the Duraball in relay race in which teammates must race the track while rolling the Duraball by their sides with a stick / pole before handing both ball and stick off to the next teammate.
  • To develop social skills and overall confidence, utilize Duraball as part of an ice-breaker activity by passing it among the participants. The person in possession of the ball must answer the designated ice-breaker question (What is your name? What is your favorite food? What is your favorite movie? Who is your favorite cartoon character?, etc.) before passing it along to another participant.
  • To develop self-expression skills, utilize the Duraball during a social skills group discussion. A facilitator will read or describe scenarios, and participants take turns sitting on the Duraball to then describe how the scenario makes them feel or how they would react while the other participants wait their turn.
