Kids will be inspired to create with the Sand Artist kit! Each set comes with 12 vivid colors of sand, two 5x7 design canvases, protective sheets and an etching stylus. The kit also includes an instruction card for basic techniques and six special effects for more advanced projects. 

Sensory 4

Skills

  • Child can mix colors of the sand to explore and create.
  • The sand and sticky design canvases stimulate tactile processing and awareness.
  • The sound of etching and spreading the sand stimulates auditory processing and awareness. 

Play Ideas

  • Mix glitter into the sand to create an added visual sensory element.
  • Child can stick pompoms, sequins, yarn or glitter onto the design canvas to add different textures to the art project.
  • If child does not like the texture of the sand, he can color the design canvas instead (do not peel the stickers from the design canvas if coloring).
  • Pour the sand and place the design canvas (with portions peeled off) in a shoe box or small food storage container and let the child shake it up to stick on the sand. 

Adaptation Ideas

  • Use gloves when placing and spreading the sand on the design canvas.
  • Children who have visual impairments may benefit from the design canvas being on a dark surface when creating. For example, a black placemat.
  • Use school glue to create shapes or designs on the sticky canvas then. This will create raised designs for the child to feel when dry. Note: Pour sand over school glue first, let dry and then add more sand to create the rest of the design canvas.

  • Child will use encourage fine motor skills during play when spreading the sand and placing the sand on the design canvas.
  • Child can hone isolated finger movements when spreading the sand on the design canvas.
  • Creating the design canvas’ by pouring and spreading the sand can help a child work on hand-eye coordination. 

Play Ideas

  • Have the child spread sand with non-dominant hand. This may help a child who has a weaker side use and strengthen that side.
  • Pour the sand and place the design canvas (with portions peeled off) in a shoe box or small food storage container and let the child shake it up to stick on the sand.
  • Child can stick pompoms, sequins, yarn or glitter onto the design canvas using kid friendly tweezers to engage fine motor skills.

Adaptation Ideas

  • Tape the design canvas to the table so that it does not slip around when child is creating.
  • Place sand and design canvas inside of a cookie sheet to keep the project contained. 

Social/Emotional 3

  • The Sand Artist kit can help children learn about social awareness and etiquette when crafting with others.
  • Children can become more self-aware of how they act and react to others when crafting together.
  • Self-Esteem and confidence are influenced when submitting artwork on the Creative Adventures Gallery.      

Play Ideas

  • Before crafting, a caregiver can review the directions and sequence of creating a design canvas with the child.
  • Child can create a design canvas to send to someone as a card and write a message or draw a picture on the backside.
  • Adapt a spinner from a game to include the 12 sand colors. When creating a design canvas, spin the spinner to choose the next color. 

Adaptation Ideas

  • Limit the number of color choices to the child so they do not become overwhelmed with sand color options.
